¿Cuánto tiempo de nuestra vida pasamos…

El tiempo es oro, nadie lo duda. Aún más, es la dimensión específica que dicta el ritmo de nuestras existencias. Instante a instante, minuto a minuto, hora tras hora… Inexorablemente, las agujas del reloj van marcando su transcurso. Se nos gasta, por eso es tan precioso. Alguna batalla ya le hemos ganado, nuestra esperanza de vida se ha duplicado en este último siglo, pero él aún tiene la victoria final: sigue siendo limitado.

Y mientras avanza, lo consumimos con desigual frecuencia en mil y una actividades que, si calculáramos el intervalo que nos lleva cada una en el cómputo total de la vida, más de uno se sorprendería. En esas tareas breves e indispensables, en las que consumimos sólo unos pocos minutos pero repetimos a diario, se nos va al final una gran cantidad de tiempo: a cepillarnos los dientes, por ejemplo, dedicamos ¡un trimestre de nuestra existencia! Unos cuantos días más, hasta 106 jornadas, invierte el organismo en función tan esencial como hacer pis.

Pero si la mayoría de estas ocupaciones se nos pasan inadvertidas, hay otras en las que empleamos un buen pedazo de nuestra vida y que, al resultarnos pesadas o poco gratas, las consumimos mirando lo lento que se mueve a veces el minutero.

¿Cuántas colas aguardamos, por ejemplo? A esperar turno en la fila del mercado o del autobús destinamos casi 2 años, ¡500 días! En rellenar formularios, se sacrifican 305 soporíferas jornadas. Por no hablar de los casi 10 años de media que estamos ocupados en trabajar, lo que supone aproximadamente una séptima parte de nuestra vida consagrada a la jornada laboral.

Mucho tiempo ocupados, pero muy poco divertidos

Si analizamos esta tabla de tiempos, es triste pensar que, frente a los 3 años que gastamos en transporte o el año y 195 días que empleamos en quehaceres como cocinar, los periodos que se otorgan a aquello que nos divierte o resulta placentero se quedan en una insignificancia.

Para disfrutar de la lectura sólo contabilizamos una media de 250 días; con aún más breve lapso, 110 días, contamos en la vida para hacer el amor.

Nos resta el consuelo de que, si el tiempo es oro, también es relativo, y su percepción ha variado en su transcurso. En épocas pasadas en las que la existencia estaba marcada por la naturaleza, se tenía una noción cíclica del tiempo. Según Alvin Toffler en su libro La tercera ola, no existían unidades temporales fijas –horas, años– sino la conciencia de fragmentos indefinidos que equivalían al intervalo necesario para realizar cierta tarea (ordeñar una vaca, recoger una cosecha…)

En Madagascar, la unidad de tiempo aceptada hoy es una cocción de arroz, lo que evidencia que la presunción de temporalidad tampoco es igual en todas las culturas, ni siquiera dentro de una misma sociedad actual, donde existen grandes diferencias entre cómo la percibe el que vive en el campo y el que sufre las horas punta de la gran ciudad.

Pero el tiempo es tan relativo que se hace elástico, encogiéndose y dilatándose con la edad, por ejemplo.

Y esa relatividad es tan patente que, según gustos, se perciben de forma distinta lapsos iguales –si entregar 23 años de la vida al sueño es para unos un bien necesario, para otros es un despilfarro– y marca diferencias en el modo en que consumen el tiempo ambos sexos: mientras la mujer invierte 2 años en lavarse, el hombre no ocupa más de 117 días en la tarea; mientras a ellos les bastan 177 días para vestirse, ella dedica 1 año más (531 días).

Aún así, a pesar de que el tiempo sea relativo y ya que indudablemente nos resulta tan sagrado, es un alivio pensar que en llorar sólo malgastamos 50 días de la existencia, una doceava parte de lo que invertimos en reír.

Un bonus: multiplica por tu edad y divide por 69 cualquier dato de la tabla para saber cuánto tiempo llevas en tu vida haciendo eso.

Como este artículo se publicó en 1999 cuestiones geeks tales como «Cuánto tiempo pasas en Internet» no estaban siquiera presentes; tampoco otras del estilo «Cuánto tiempo pasas delante del ordenador» o «Cuánto tiempo pasas frente a la consola de juegos». El final del artículo de Muy se habla de lo «relativo que es el tiempo» y cómo parece transcurrir más rápido para los adultos que para los jóvenes. Al leerlo me pareció una deliciosa confirmación de la teoría que Miguel nuestro lector hubiera calculado que lo había leído «a finales de los 80 o principios de los 90»: se equivocó por más de doble, pues él creía que el artículo era de al menos hace veinte años y en realidad se publicó en 1999, por lo que tiene tan solo una década.

I’ve written previously on the topic of curiosity because I’m convinced that it is an essential skill to build as a blogger. Learning to ask ‘why’, ‘what if’ and ‘I wonder…’ are great questions t build into your life if you want to be a more creative person.

2. Seeing Problems as Interesting and Acceptable

One of the problems of the Western mindset is that we often see problems or obstacles in life as unacceptable parts of life. We avoid pain or suppress it when it comes and in doing so don’t often see and feel symptoms that are there to tell us something important. Creative people see problems as a natural and normal part of life – in fact they often have a fascination with problems and are drawn to them.

3. Confronting Challenge

Many of the most creative ideas through out history have come from people facing a challenge or crisis and rather than running from it asking ‘how can I overcome this’?

4. Constructive Discontent

Creative people often have an acute awareness of what’s wrong with the world around them – however they are constructive about this awareness and won’t allow themselves to get bogged down in grumbling about it – they take their discontent and let it be a motivation to doing something constructive.

5. Optimism

Creative people generally have a deeply held belief that most (if not all) problems can be solved. No challenge is too big to be overcome and no problem cannot be solved (this doesn’t mean they’re always happy or never depressed – but they don’t generally get stumped by a challenge).

6. Suspending Judgment

The ability to hold off on judging or critiquing an idea is important in the process of creativity. Often great ideas start as crazy ones – if critique is applied too early the idea will be killed and never developed into something useful and useable. (note – this doesn’t mean there is never a time for critique or judgement in the creative process – it’s actually key – but there is a time and place for it).

7. Seeing Hurdles as leading to improvements and solutions

This relates to some of the above – but by ‘hurdles’ I mean problems and mistakes in the creative process itself. Sometimes it’s on the journey of developing an idea that the real magic happens and it’s often out of the little problems or mistakes that the idea is actually improved.

8. Perseverance

Creative people who actually see their ideas come to fruition have the ability to stick with their ideas and see them through – even when the going gets tough. This is what sets apart the great from the good in this whole sphere. Stick-ability is key.

9. Flexible Imagination

I love watching a truly creative person at work when they’re ‘on fire’. They have this amazing ability to see a problem or challenge and it’s many potential solutions simultaneously and they have an intuitive knack at being able to bring previously disconnected ideas together in flashes of brilliance that seem so simple – yet which are so impossible to dream up for the average person.

Is Creativity tied to Personality Type or Can it be Learned?

As I read through this list of traits of creative people – the question that I find myself asking is whether creativity is tied to personality type or whether it can be learned.

My own uneducated answer to this question is – ‘yes’.

Some people are just creative – they don’t train themselves to think like they do and they often don’t even know that they are any different from the rest of us – it’s just who they are.

However I believe that we can all enhance our ability to be creative over time.

What happened?

Schools have crushed creativity. We were told to color within the lines. We were taught to follow instructions. The goal in
school is to get the “right” answer. Unfortunately, if you’re afraid to be wrong, you’ll never be creative or original.

The job of education is to produce employees who follow instructions. And to this endeavor, they are doing a
very good job. However, in terms of creativity, they are falling terribly short.

This is one of the most unfortunate realities in our current education system.

To undo this, we must continuallyexercise our creative juices. That’s why I have put together 6 tips for expanding your creativity.

1. Keep a Notebook and Pencil on hand at all times.

Ideas are like in-laws, you never know when they’re coming over to visit. By keeping a notebook around, you will always
be able to capture your ideas at any time of the day.

Leonardo da Vinci was well known for keeping a journal of his ideas. His notebooks are now prized possessions that hold
the many creative and genius thoughts of this master thinker, painter, and inventor.

His notebooks were filled with plans for flying machines, a parachute, a helicopter, the extendable ladder, the bicycle,
folding furniture, and a number of automated tools for increasing productivity.

Yes, I am happy to say that Leonardo da Vinci was a productivity junkie.

A blank page is an open invitation for the creative and curious mind. The simple act of writing gets you into a
creative flow that can last for hours.

The free-flowing, exploratory practice of keeping a journal encourages freedom of thought and expanded perspectives.

2. The second key to creativity is to ask questions.

Questions are the root of all knowledge and creativity. By continually asking questions about the world around us, we
fuel our creative fire.

Great minds are those that have asked the greatest questions.

Leonardo da Vinci asked such questions as:

“Why does the thunder last a longer time than that which causes it?” and “Why is the sky blue?”

Socrates asked such questions as:

* “What is wisdom?”
* “What is piety?”
* “What is beauty?”

As a young boy, Albert Einstein asked himself, “What would it be like to run beside a light beam at the speed of
light?”

A number of inventions have been created by asking one simple question…

“What if…..?”

By asking questions we increase our level of consciousness and our perspective of the world.

3. To become a creative genius, you must also be a voracious reader.

Reading enhances your mental ability and lets you experience the world from a brand new perspective.

When we read a book, we let go of our own perspectives and experience the world from the characters that have been crafted by the author.

I have found in my own life that the more I read, the more I want to know. Reading becomes an insatiable desire and an unquenchable thirst.

4. Seek out new experiences.

Our minds are much like a garden. Without proper care, the weeds will take over. Nothing sparks the mind like learning something new.

If you want to expand your creativity, then learn a new skill. It can be anything you choose. Learn a new language.
Learn to water ski. Learn to play an instrument. Pick up photography or even try a new sport.

All of these activities get your mind working outside of its regular patterns.

5. Become a whole-brain thinker.

There are generally two-types of people in this world: left-brained and right-brained.

In most cases, people are either analytical thinkers who enjoy math, science, and logic or they are highly
imaginative and creative individuals who focus on the big-picture.

Unfortunately, our school systems generally cater to those who are left-brained analytical thinkers. This has created
a world of employees who are very good at following directions but are not so good at developing new ideas.

To break the mold, we must become whole-brain, holistic thinkers.

You can do this by using a powerful method known as mind mapping.

Mind mapping has been used by some of history’s greatest brains, including Michelangelo, Mark Twain, and Leonardo da
Vinci.

Mind mapping is a whole-brain activity that will awaken your creative side as well as your analytical side.

Mind mapping will also help you to generate new ideas when needed. It doesn’t matter whether you’re using it for
personal goal setting, problem solving, or simply to become a more creative, whole-brain thinker.

Our mind works in pictures, associating one idea to the next. Mind mapping allows you to continue this natural
thought process on paper.

Mind mapping is one of the most powerful tools for awakening your creativity.

6. The final tool for developing your creativity is imaginary dialogue.

Yes, I know, it may sound silly at first, but this technique can be an extremely powerful tool for developing your
creativity.

This technique was first introduced in the best-selling book by Napoleon Hill, “Think and Grow Rich”.

Before achieving his success, Napoleon Hill was first meeting with an imaginary mastermind each night. He would
close his eyes and visualize a table occupied by such great men as Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Napoleon
Bonaparte, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Elbert Hubbard.

Napoleon Hill would then speak to the members of his imaginary mastermind in the following manner:

“Mr. Lincoln: I desire to build in my own character those qualities of patience and fairness toward all mankind and
the keen sense of humor which were your outstanding characteristics.”

“Mr. Washington: I desire to build in my own character those qualities of patriotism and self-sacrifice and leadership which were your outstanding characteristics.”

“Mr. Hubbard: I desire to develop the ability to equal and even to excel the ability that you possessed with which to express yourself in clear, concise and forceful language.”

After meeting with his mastermind group for several months, he found that he had developed each of their desired
characteristics into his own personality.

Napoleon also went to his imaginary mastermind to help solve any problem he was facing.

The imaginary mastermind is a master tool for finding new perspectives and looking at your problem from a different angle.

For example, let’s say that you own a business. Why not develop an imaginary mastermind of the greatest business
minds in history? You can call to your table such names as Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie, Walt Disney, Bill Gates, Ray
Kroc, and Sam Walton.

Call on them daily for advice and you will begin to see your problems in a new light. As once said by Albert Einstein,

“You can’t solve a problem with the same mind that created it.”

You can have even more creative fun by imagining a discussion between two different well-known people.
Some examples to get you started include:

* Bill Gates Vs. Steve Jobs
* Leonardo da Vinci vs. Albert Einstein
* William Shakespeare vs. Maya Angelou

Let your mind wander and you will be surprised at all of the connections you begin to make.

Cuando medimos la creatividad de niños, virtualmente todos ellos estarán bajo el rubro de “altamente creativo”. Sin embargo, en la adultez, son pocos los que alcanzan dicho mérito.

¿Alguna vez se habían imaginado algo como ésto?. El hombre de la figura no está enfermo ni se ha vuelto loco; no está haciendo burbujas con el agua del retrete ni mucho menos. De hecho, éste es un invento que ha sido registrado ante la oficina de patentes de Estados Unidos, en el año de 1982. Éste snorkel para sanitarios tiene una función más importante de lo que parece. El invento fue diseñado para que el extremo de la manguera (27) siga hasta el compartimiento (25) a través de los clásicos zig-zag del retrete.

El objetivo de ésto, es obtener aire fresco en caso de un incendio en un edificio alto, en donde el humo es altamente tóxico y puede causar la muerte. Ojalá que alguna persona con malestar estomacal no haya usado el baño antes de que intentes tomar una bocanada de aire fresco con ésto.

40% de las mujeres experimentan un descenso en su libido.

El proyecto está encabezado por el profesor Robert Millar, director de la Unidad de Reproducción Humana del Consejo de Invetigaciones Médicas de Edimburgo.

Según el experto, las pruebas del fármaco que libera la hormona “gonadotropina tipo II”, han resultado exitosas en animales (especialmente en monas), pero todavía habrá que esperar varios años para conseguir una versión humana.

Millar agregó que también se podría desarrollar en el futuro esta “píldora maravilla” para hombres, pero para eso primero habría que experimentar con animales machos.

Se calcula que la falta de interés sexual es muy común entre las mujeres y hasta un 40% de ellas llegan a padecerla en algún momento de sus vidas.

Dos pájaros de un solo tiro

Existen ya en el mercado farmacéutico una serie de tratamientos para diferentes tipos de disfunciones sexuales.

Por otra parte, cada vez son más las personas que comienzan a recurrir a fármacos contra la obesidad.

Sólo en Escocia (donde se realizó este estudio) se calcula que son unas 8.000 personas, lo que representa un costo anual de unos ocho millones de dólares.

El profesor Millar cree que su investigación podría orientarse a dar con el primer fármaco para un “estilo de vida” que al mismo tiempo que produce efecto en la vida sexual, también incide en el apetito.

A esta conclusión llegó después de los ensayos de laboratorios en los que se inyectó la droga a hembras de dos tipos de simios.

El científico explicó que las monas mostraron una serie de comportamientos dirigidos a provocar el apareamiento.

En efecto, en todos los casos solicitaron a los machos la relación sexual a través de diferentes signos, incluyendo movimientos de la lengua, párpados, cola y el ofrecimiento del trasero.

Pero un curioso e inesperado efecto secundario fue que los animales redujeron considerablemente la cantidad de injesta de alimento, a casi una tercera parte de su dieta habitual.

Escepticismo

Millar y su equipo de investigación trabajan ahora en la producción del fármaco en forma de píldora, la que -según indica- podría ser extremadamente redituable por el interés de la industria farmacéutica en encontrar productos que estimulen la libido.

“La próxima etapa es producir una sustancia que simule las acciones de esta hormona en áreas del cerebro que sospechamos afectan la conducta reproductiva”, dijo el científico.

“Es muy probable que hagamos este trabajo en sociedad con una compañía farmacológica y tengamos la píldola para las mujeres en el transcurso de los próximos diez años”, agregó.

Pero algunos psicólogos criticaron la investigación de Millar por considerar que muchos problemas de disfunción sexual tienen sus raíces en problemas de relación y no en los niveles de libido.

“En mi experiencia, cuando las parejas vienen a consultarme por problemas sexuales, lo último que quieren examinar es lo que ocurre en su relación de pareja. Prefieren creer que se debe a cualquier otra cosa”, dijo la Dra. Lesley Perman-Kerr.

“Creo que las mujeres terminarán tomando esta píldora no tanto para incrementar su apetito sexual, sino para reducir su apetito por comida”, agregó la especialista.

En mayo de 2003, June falleció a los 73 años luego de ser sometida a una intervención quirúrgica. Sólo cuatro meses después, Johnny, de 71 años no pudo sobrevivir a las complicaciones que se presentaron en su diabetes.

La situación es particularmente crítica en los primeros seis meses luego de la desaparición del cónyuge, dice el estudio que publica esta semana la revista especializada Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

En ese período se puede producir la muerte del viudo por diferentes causas, mientras que en los cinco años subsiguientes existe un alto índice de posibilidad de desarrollar desórdenes cardíacos.

Según Cathy Ross, de la Fundación de Cardiología Británica, una de las razones por las cuales se da este fenómeno es que la gente que pierde a sus parejas a menudo adquiere malos hábitos.

“Algunos comienzan a fumar más, otra gente bebe más y por lo general tienden a alimentarse mal”, dijo la experta para quien la cuestión radica en cómo se lleva el duelo más que el dolor de la pérdida en sí mismo.

The conquistadores named the city La Muy Noble y Muy Leal Ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala (“The Very Noble and Very Loyal City of Santiago of the Knights of Guatemala”) but it was known just as Santiago de Guatemala, in honor of their patron saint, Santiago, after Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

In 1773, a series of earthquakes destroyed much of the town. The Spanish Crown ordered (1776) the removal of the capital to a safer location, where Guatemala City, the modern capital of Guatemala, now stands. The badly damaged city was ordered abandoned, although not everyone left.

Antigua today

Central Park is the heart of the city. The reconstructed fountain in particular is very beautiful. People enjoy this park from early in the morning to late at night. Nowadays, Antigua is noted for its very elaborate religious celebrations for the Holy Week leading up to Easter.

There are also many Spanish language schools located in Antigua. Because of individualized instruction and reasonable fees it has become one of the most popular places in Latin America to study Spanish. Students are usually housed with local host families or in local hotels. They can engage in many other activities apart from immersion language courses. Tourists come to see all that Antigua has to offer, including nightlife, bars, restaurants, markets selling Mayan goods, and excursions via shuttles to surrounding sites.

Volcanos

Three large volcanoes dominate the horizon around Antigua.

The most commanding, to the south of the city, is the Volcán de Agua or “Volcano of Water”, some 3766 meters (12 356 feet) high. It is so named because the crater atop it was formerly filled with water. Shortly after the Spanish conquest of Guatemala, the first capital was on a site part-way up this mountain. It was destroyed by a flood and mudslide when an earthquake let loose the water from the crater, and the capital of Guatemala was moved down the valley to the current Antigua. The original site is a village now known as “Ciudad Vieja”, (“The Old City”).

To the west of the city are a pair of peaks, Acatenango, long inactive, some 3976 meters (13045 feet) high, and the Volcán de Fuego or “Volcano of Fire”, some 3763 meters (12346 feet) high. “Fuego” is famous for being almost constantly active at a low level. Smoke issues from its top daily, but larger eruptions are rare.
